The historic Catalan cyclist, silver medalist in Athens 2004 and world champion in 2010, continues to leave his mark on the cycling scene

Registrations are still open on the event’s website, offering discounts for Canary Islands residents, although the ‘All Stages’ category has already surpassed 80% of available slots

José Antonio Hermida, the Olympic runner-up in Athens 2004, is set to tackle his third Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike, an event scheduled to take place from May 16 to 19, 2024. For the second consecutive year, the race will be included in the UCI calendar under the S2 category.

As the brand ambassador for Merida, Hermida boasts an impressive record with five Olympic participations. Besides clinching the silver medal, he earned Olympic diplomas in Sydney and London, finishing in fourth place. In addition to his Olympic achievements, the Catalan cyclist secured the elite world championship title in Canada in 2010, adding to the gold he had previously won in relay events in three earlier world championships (1999, 2000, and 2005).

His extensive list of accolades includes two individual bronze medals at the world championships, along with three individual gold medals at the European Championships. In total, he has amassed 14 medals across continental and world championships, solidifying his status as one of the mountain biking legends.

The ninth edition of the Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike has attracted over 300 participants from 14 different nationalities. Registration remains open through the following link: https://www.transgrancanariabike.com/, where residents of the Canary Islands can avail themselves of a 30% discount. However, the ‘All Stages’ category has already filled over 80% of its available slots.

In addition to José Antonio Hermida, the 2024 edition features confirmed local elites, including the Romanian residing in Gran Canaria, Manuela Muresan, who clinched victory in the 2020 and 2022 editions. Other notable participants include Blas Rivero of Z2 Bike, who finished fifth in the elite category and eighth overall in the last edition, also securing the title of Canarian road champion in the elite category in 2023. Luna Perdomo from Tenerife BikePoint Gspor, who secured seventh place in the overall women’s standings in the last Transgrancanaria Bike and second in the Master 30 category, is also confirmed. Néstor Rodríguez from Riu Pro Team, third in the Master 40 category this year, and Arístides González, returning for another race after being unable to finish in the last edition, complete the stellar lineup.

The Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike is organized by Arista Eventos and enjoys the main sponsorship of Fred. Olsen Express, with the support of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria through the Tourism of Gran Canaria and the Insular Sports Institute, the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Maspalomas Costa Canaria.
