Klimatiza Toteemi’s Miguel Muñoz wins the second stage and dons the red jersey in the men’s overall standings, 10 seconds ahead of Dutchman Hans Becking

The Dutch cyclist from Buff-Megamo, Rosa van Doorn, strengthens her lead in the overall standings of the ninth edition of the Fred.Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike after winning this Friday in the second stage, a 23.5-kilometer time trial between Parque Sur in Maspalomas and Ayagaures, which was held under light drizzle in some parts. In the men’s classification, there was a change of leader following the victory of Andalusian Miguel Muñoz from Klimatiza Toteemi, who dethroned yesterday’s stage winner, Dutchman Hans Becking from Buff-Megamo.
Van Doorn left no chance for her pursuers, finishing the stage with a one-minute lead over her compatriot Tessa Kortekaas. At the intermediate checkpoint in Arteara, the Buff-Megamo cyclist recorded the fastest time among the women, distancing herself by 37 seconds from the Cannondale ISB cyclist. At the finish line on the Ayagaures dam wall, Van Doorn posted a time of 1:01:42, compared to the 1:02:42 of the Lanzarote-based cyclist. Third in the stage was Romanian Manuela Muresan with a time of 1:05:12, 47 seconds ahead of Andalusian Natalia Fischer.

In the men’s category, Klimatiza Toteemi’s cyclist Miguel Muñoz took victory, leading the intermediate checkpoint by five seconds over Dutchman Hans Becking from Buff-Megamo, a gap that widened to 10 seconds at the finish line with a time of 51:14 compared to last year’s race winner’s 51:24. In third place was current Spanish champion Sergio Mantecón (Scott Cala Bandida), who, with a time of 52:16, secured the podium ahead of Luis Ángel Maté (Fundación Euskadi). Marcos García from Camping Nauta Tenerife-Ulevel was the first Canarian of the stage, finishing eighth (54:56).

At the finish line, Muñoz acknowledged that the time trial suited his characteristics, starting with technical sections and ending with an ascent. “There are still two days left with much to be decided. I will try to defend the jersey and bring the victory home,” he declared after taking the overall lead by 10 seconds over Hans Becking. Sergio Mantecón is in third place, 1:01 behind the leader and 42 seconds ahead of fourth place, Enrique Morcillo.

In the Master 30 category, Brazilian Vanessa Lessa took both stage victory and overall lead in the women’s race, while Daniel Santana did the same for the men. In the Master 40 women’s category, Lourdes Bethencourt won the stage and took the overall lead, while Francisco Javier Macías achieved both in the men’s category. In the Master 50 women’s category, Swedish Lena Kristina Berndtsson won the stage and secured the overall lead, and Jorge López did the same for the men. Finally, in the Master 60 men’s category, José Ramón López was the fastest in the stage and remains the overall leader.
The Fred.Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike continues this Saturday morning with the third stage of 45.6 kilometers, starting and finishing in Cañón del Águila, which will go through the Tirajana ravine and the surroundings of the Amurga massif.
