Luis Ángel Maté (Marbella, 1984) returns for the fifth consecutive year to the Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike. The race, which is included in the UCI calendar (in the S2 category), will celebrate its tenth edition between the 15th and 18th of May in the southern part of the island of Gran Canaria. Professional for 17 seasons from 2008 to 2024, Maté has an enviable track record and has been a key figure in the international cycling peloton, especially known for his combative character.
The professional career of “El Lince”, the nickname by which he is known sportingly, began in 2008 with the Andalucía-Cajasur team. In 2009, he signed for the Italian team Androni Giocattoli, where he remained until 2010. In 2011 he joined the French team Cofidis, where he stayed until 2020. In 2021 he signed for Euskaltel-Euskadi, where he competed until his professional retirement in 2024.

Throughout his career, he took part in 18 grand tours: 12 Vueltas a España and 6 Tours de France. He finished 31st in the 2014 edition of the Tour de France, while his best classification in the Vuelta a España was that same year, coming in the Top 20 with a 19th place. The Andalusian rider also had a big impact in the Vuelta Andalucía, where he won the mountain jersey and the flying goal jersey in 2012. He also won two stages in the Tour of Portugal, one in 2023 and one in 2024.
Debut in Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike
His first participation in the Fred. Olsen Transgrancanaria Bike came in 2021, the same year he signed with the professional team Euskaltel-Euskadi. Since then, the Andalusian athlete has achieved three consecutive podiums in the overall (2021, 2022 and 2023). The year of his last podium finish, he also won the fourth stage of the race starting and finishing in Parque Sur. In his last participation in 2024, he came close to the podium again, finishing fifth overall.

Four stages through the south of Gran Canaria
The Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike will repeat the format of four open stages, being able to participate in all of them (All Stages) or individually. The first stage will be on Thursday, May 15th and will start from the Cañón del Águila; 45.6 kilometres with 470 metres of positive vertical drop to start the adventure. On Friday there will be a time trial from Parque Sur to Ayagaures; 23.5 kilometres of pure excitement with 608 metres of positive ascent. On the third day it will be the turn of the awaited XCO from the Barranco de Maspalomas; a circuit of 5.5 kilometres and 700 metres of elevation gain where the cyclists will have to ride six laps for a total of 33 kilometres. To finish the weekend, the athletes will face the longest and steepest stage; 69.7 kilometres and 1,261 metres of positive vertical drop starting and finishing in Parque Sur de Maspalomas. This last stage will also be available for the E-Bike modality, which will start in Ayagaures and finish in Parque Sur.
The Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike, organised by Arista Eventos, has the main sponsorship of Fred. Olsen Express. It also receives the support of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria through the institutions Turismo de Gran Canaria and the Instituto Insular de Deportes, as well as the Government of the Canary Islands with Islas Canarias Latitud de Vida.
