A mountain biking legend will once again be at the starting line of the Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike. The organization of the race, which will take place from May 15 to 18, has confirmed the participation of José Antonio Hermida, who will mark his fourth consecutive appearance in this UCI calendar race, classified as S2 category. Silver medalist at the Athens 2004 Olympics and world champion in 2010, the Merida brand ambassador is one of the most renowned names in the sport in Spain. In addition to the silver medal won in Athens 2004, Hermida has taken part in five Olympic Games, earning Olympic diplomas in Sydney 2000 and London 2012. He was crowned world champion in Canada (2010), a title he had previously achieved in relay events at the World Championships in 1999, 2000, and 2005. He also boasts two individual bronze medals at World Championships and three golds at the European Championships.
In total, 14 medals for a mountain biking legend, who will once again compete in the Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike this May. Hermida’s presence at the Gran Canaria event will give the more than 300 registered participants the opportunity to share experiences and ride alongside one of the greats of the discipline.
The Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike will once again feature the four-stage open format, allowing participants to compete in all stages (All Stages) or choose to race individually. Stage one will take place on Thursday, May 15, starting from Cañón del Águila; a 45.6-kilometer route with 470 meters of elevation gain to kick off the adventure. On Friday, the Time Trial will run from Parque Sur to Ayagaures; 23.5 kilometers of pure thrill with 608 meters of elevation gain. Day three will feature the much-anticipated XCO from Barranco de Maspalomas; a 5.5-kilometer circuit with 700 meters of elevation gain, where cyclists will complete six laps for a total of 33 kilometers. To wrap up the weekend, athletes will face the longest and most demanding stage, with 69.7 kilometers and 1,261 meters of elevation gain, starting and finishing at Parque Sur in Maspalomas. This final stage will also be open to the E-Bike category, with a start in Ayagaures and finish in Parque Sur.
