The veteran cyclist of the Euskaltel Euskadi team will compete in the mountain bike race after another successful season on the top of the Vuelta a España.

A new figure of the road cycling world has joined the Fred. Olsen Express Transgrancanaria Bike in its calendar. Luis Ángel Maté from Malaga, rider of the Euskaltel Euskadi team, joins Juan Pedro López as one of the illustrious participants of the sixth edition of the Gran Canaria stage race.

Maté, with a long professional career since 2008, has been a great protagonist in this last Vuelta a España. Not only for his role on the road, where he took 30th place in the general classification and led one of the most exciting breakaways of the Spanish round, but also in the post-race, as not satisfied with the 21 days of the race, he promoted his own challenge “La vuelta de la Vuelta”, in which the rider returned to Marbella from Santiago on his bike, which led him to grab a lot of headlines in the media.

The Euskaltel-Euskadi team rider added his tenth Vuelta a España with his final classification in 2021, consolidating his position as one of the country’s most recognised cyclists. He has also won six Tours de France and has taken part in numerous classics such as the ‘Vuelta a Andalucía’, the ‘Ruta del Sur’, the ‘Vuelta a Murcia’ and the ‘Tour de San Luis’.

“I’m really looking forward to this year’s Transgrancanaria Bike, it’s always a luxury to go to Gran Canaria because it’s an island I’m very fond of and especially because it’s a real paradise for cycling and cycle touring”, says Luis Ángel Maté, who until now has only been in Gran Canaria with the road bike, “I’m also looking forward to being there with the mountain bike, I’ve only been with the road bike and now discovering it with the mountain bike makes me very excited, Transgrancanaria Bike is a race that I’m really looking forward to so I can’t wait to November”.

The event is sponsored by Fred.Olsen Express, which will once again offer discounts for the transfer of participants moving between islands for the race. Furthermore, the aim of the Transgrancanaria Bike is to consolidate Gran Canaria as a unique place in the world for mountain sports, which is why the support of the Gran Canaria Tourist Board and the Island Sports Institute is very important for the 2021 edition, which is still open for registration through www.transgrancanariabike.com.
